Internet Basics Tutorial

To understand the basics of the internet we need to clearly define a few terms that you may have heard.
We're going to start with the term network.  In the broad definition a network is an interconnected system of things or people. In the world of computers a network is a group of computers that are able to talk to each other through a similar protocal.

These computers that are connected in a network generally fall into two categories. The first one we will discuss is our next term, Server. A server is a program that provides information to other computers. Often times this program is so important that we give it its own computer to run on, hince us calling a single computer a server. Often times the term server is used without specifying if its a computer or a program, just keep in mind that there are different types of server programs such as web servers, database servers, and FTP servers. You should be able to figure out which server is referenced based on the context it us used in.

The second type of computer we are going to discuss is is called a client. A client computer is the one that you most often use. It refers to a computer that requests information from server computers. A good example of this is when you go to a website. You may type in an address such as google.com and your computer, the client computer, requests information from the server computer that is located at that address. The server computer then sends information about that address to the client computer and the google homepage apears on your screen.

A network can be as simple as two computers linked together or perhaps 30 computers at a small business, or even millions of computers all over the world which we refer to as the world wide web or simply the internet.
